Treeless Saddles

When I bought my horse Tango in 2001, I didn't have a saddle for him. So I went to the local saddle shop and they sent me home with a few saddles, that I could try out for myself.
I ended up buying a saddle which I thought fitted nicely. After a few months Tango started getting white hairs around his shoulderblades. Not good.

So I sold the saddle and called a specialized saddle fitter, who came over with a truck full of saddles which I started trying out. I wasn't convinced. Tango started bucking on one saddle, which fitted him nicely according to the saddle fitter.

I didn't buy a saddle but started a search on the internet. While brushing Tango a few days later, I discovered a spot on his spine, I found a horse chiropractor to have a look at his back, the bucking was for a good reason, he had a very sore back and that saddle was pushing on the sore vertebra.

Now I really started worrying. Why did a proffesional saddlefitter miss that ?

I started doing more research and found information about the barefoot treeless saddles. They sounded good and gave me confidence. I ordered my first barefoot saddle from Germany. From the first ride on Tango I noticed an improvement, his gaits became nicer and he could jump into canter without any problem. Even side passes became easy. I had found my saddle.

Also around that time I became friends with a Dutch horse chiropractor. She was also a holistic vet and used acupuncture on horses. She taught me a lot about the horses skeleton, back problems and problems related to back/body issues. Over the years I helped a lot of horses with problems in their bodies, related to bad saddle fittings.

I'm not a certified saddle fitter. The courses given in Holland aren't good in my opinion, as you learn to fit a saddle on a horse that stands still. Also you learn only to look at the horse and not at the rider. I think a saddle should be good for both, not only when you stand still, but also when you go for a good ride !

I have tried many different treeless saddle brands and was an official barefoot dealer in Holland from 2004-2009. I can see and locate problems related to bad saddle fittings and I can help you try different treeless saddles and see which brand/model works best for you AND your horse.

I'm an official Horse Connection agent and work only in the South Western part of W.A.
