Bitless bridles

Types of bitless bridles

You'll find a lot of information about different bitless bridles on the internet.

There are many different types of bitless bridles available. My favourite is a cross link system.
A lot of bitless bridles can cause pain and/or are pain-based in their mechanism.

I've tested many different types of bitless bridles and I can recommend the following:
- Barefoot bitless bridles
- Light Rider bitless bridle
- Norton bitless bridle

Barefoot bitless bridles

The Barefoot bitless bridle evenly and smoothly distributes all pressure over the horses nose, his jaw and the poll.
This bridle doesn´t apply punctual pressure but ensures painless aids from the reins, thus creating a trusting
companionship between horse and rider.

The throatlatches are prolonged reins, which cross under the horse´s chin and through rings that are connected
directly to the noseband. This ensures, that all aids are easily understood by the horse. Giving to the bit is
more easily achieved, without wrong flexion at the poll or a tilt or twist there. Bitless bridles enable riding
with the smallest aids possible, meaning a short impuls with the right rein creates a painfree but distinct pressure
to the left side of the horse´s head. The horse moves away from that pressure, therefore turns his head to the right.

Short and soft pressure applied with both reins - your horse will give to that and tuck his head.

Can be used for any style of riding: Dressage, Jumping, Western, Endurance or Trailrides - also for lunging.
Like with any new bit, try in an enclosed riding arena first. The noseband should be fitted so that it lays 2 cm above the mouth crease - there should be room for two fingers.

This bitless bridle is extremely smooth: the noseband as well as the browband are padded softly.
The crownpiece is extra wide and thickly padded to reduce any pressure on the sensitive acupuncture points behind the ears.

- flexible nubuck buffaloleather
- crowned noseband and browband
- soft neopren padding surrounded by calfskin leather
- crownpiece with decorative stitching
- antirust metal fittings
- Bitless alternative for all riding styles
- soft and even distribution of pressure without any force
- no punctual pressure
- soft nose-, browband and crownpiece padding
- crownpiece padded extra softly and extra wide

Bridle Syringa 2-in-1

The Bridle Syringa can be used without a bit as side-pull or as a Bitless-Bridle with crossed reins – see below.
It is great to be used for ground work or longeing. Browband and crown-piece are padded softly. The crown-piece is extra wide and thickly padded, so it reduces punctual pressure behind the ears noticeably. Pressure is applied onto the bridge of the nose by two doubled ropes, which are tied together along the side.

Cross under style Bitless Bridle:
Can be used as a cross under style Bitless Bridle, the reins are prolonged and attach to the throat-latch.
Thanks to the crossed reins, the aids are easily understood and having the horse give to the bit is much easier achieved. A short impulse on the left rein will apply a soft but distinct pressure onto the right side of the horse's cheek – the horse moves away from that pressure towards the left. A short impulse on both reins or alternating on both will lead your horse to yield.

Sidepull:
If you want to use the Bridle as a side-pull, simply attach the reins to the rings along the nose-band and take off the leather bands which run to the throat-latch and are attached with snap-hooks.

This bridle can be adjusted on both sides, as well as the chin strap, which is leather-made. Comes with matching reins in a leather-rope combination with snap-hooks.

• bitless alternative for all styles of riding
• soft and even distribution of pressure without force
• softly padded brow-band
• Crown-piece extra-wide and thickly padded
• Embroidery on Brow-band and Cheek-piece
• including reins

Barefoot Amber sidepull with reins.

Gorgeous plaited leather sidepull in a rich light brown colour with matching reins. A sidepull relies on nose pressure and is the least severe style of bitless bridle available. They work perfectly for the trail with clear signals for stopping, backing and turning.
Traditionally sidepulls are used to break in horses in southern Europe and other places, the horses learn to yield to minimal pressure on the head perfectly before the introduction of any style of bit.

A sidepull is not meant to be ridden with continous contact but rather for loose rein riding. Due to no knots sitting on the sensitive facial nerves of the horse a sidepull is more humane than any rope-halter bridle with knots. The release is instant and the control is very good without inflicting any pain.

Light Rider bitless bridle

Invented by Cynthia Cooper (Natural Horse World Australia).
With the reins attached in a similar position to a bit, the Light Rider Bridle delivers a much clearer, more direct message to the nose.
Some horses get confused or resist ‘whole head’ pressure so they respond better to the simple but effective chinstrap of this unique bitless bridle. It works by the horse receiving release from pressure as the chinstrap slides through each noseband ring.

The unique chinstrap of the Light Rider Bridle offers effective control by tightening (to a point) when pressure is applied. When the rein is relaxed, it releases to reward the horse. Horses find it much easier to learn and become lighter when they receive release from pressure.

* There is nothing tight on the Light Rider Bridle to bother your horse.
* The padded noseband will not mark your horse or cause excessive sweating.
* The soft nylon chinstrap releases to allow easy eating and drinking with the bridle on, without having to undo straps.
* A calm relaxed horse is a much safer ride.

Available in five styles to suit your purpose and taste:
* In elegant, leather look biothane - comes in English, Stockhorse and Western.
English
Stockhorse
Western

* And in rope - the Natural and the Performer with extra padded noseband.

The 3 biothane styles all have the following great features:
* The best looking bitless bridle - looks like a classy traditional bridle.
* Made from synthetic leather-look 'Beta Biothane' (Deluxe model) or Regular Biothane (Standard model).
* Solid stainless steel or brass fittings.
* Easy to care for - simply sponge or wipe clean with water.
* Available with or without reins.

Unique Chinstrap: The purpose of the soft webbing chin strap is to help the noseband stay in place when pressure is applied to the reins - this stops the noseband twisting around.
The chinstrap becomes snug and does not over-tighten so this bridle is usually well accepted by sensitive horses.
The swivel snaps on the reins enable you to quickly unclip them to make a lead rope.

* Padded noseband and brow band offers more comfort for your horse.
* Soft webbing adjustable chinstrap that releases for comfort and reward.
* The noseband sits higher than most bitless bridles and does not need to be tight, allowing the horses to eat and drink.
* Designed for leading your horse too, or the lead ring and strap can be removed for ridden show classes. Also great for showing in led classes without a bit.

They are nice and light, have a great feel. So if you are looking for something lighter, then these just might be what you are after.
You can attach these reins to the rings on your bit, or attach it to your halter. The great thing is, that you can undo one side and then have a lead, handy when saddling etc.
